Open Road Launches Recovery Month Programme
Former addicts showcase benefits of life without alcohol or drugs.
Former addicts, their friends, families and supporters benefitting from Open Road support in Essex and Suffolk have announced the launch of the annual Regional Recovery Month in June.
Open Road staff, volunteers and service users will throw open their doors for a colourful series of events designed to give those in alcohol or drugs treatment or anyone in the community affected by substance misuse a chance to see at first hand the benefits that freedom from addiction brings. Please see the attached Programme of Events News sheet.
A key aim of Recovery Month is to encourage new ‘recovery champions’ to get involved to help others to turn away from a drug and alcohol dependent lifestyle. Recovery champions must be able to spare a few hours a week to share their experience with those in treatment with Open Road and encourage them towards a less harmful, more fulfilling life in recovery.
Open Road will issue purple bows as a symbol of support for the recovery movement. Highlights this year also include, for the first time, a regional recovery awards evening to recognise key people, projects or services making an outstanding contribution to enabling former addicts to live drink or drug-free lives.
Recovery Month is sponsored by the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA), a special health authority which aims to improve the availability, capacity and effectiveness of drug treatment in England.
NTA regional manager Emma Pawson said: “We are working with Open Road and other partners in the local community to build a recovery system that focuses not only on helping people to get into treatment, but also on supporting them into full recovery, leaving dependency behind and successfully contributing to society. People are far more likely to pursue recovery in their own lives when they see others like them living free from dependency which is why we are delighted to once again be sponsoring this important regional event.”
